We focused our pilot program in the Vladimir region during 2008-2009. Working with six families taht year, we were able to provide practical education in life skills such as nutritional needs of the young child, budget planning, cooking, sewing and personal health awareness. Additionally, we have assisted with medical emergencies, budgetary shortfalls due to job cut backs, emotional support and legal issues.
In September 2009 we launched the Young Families Program in two new regions – Ivanovo and Kostroma. Now a total of 18 young families are benefitting from this exciting program. We have added ‘family fun evenings’ in each of the three regions. These evenings are a special time of fun and relationship for all ages.
Regular seminars and training classes are held to encourage and educate our families. Individual consultations are given to the participants by the social worker and the psychologist of the program upon the request.
Several groups of travelers have had the opportunity to visit our families in their homes, lending one more facet of the program – a personal touch. It is our desire to reach out in ways that extended family normally would.
In November 2009 we hosted our first Young Families Retreat. Young families from all three regions were invited to join an American couple for a retreat that offered relationship building techniques for couples, parenting skills and much more.
We feel very fortunate that our Young Families Program is doing so well. Below you will find some current statistics: – Divorce – 0% (in comparison witht he National Data of 75%) – Abandonemnt of their own children – 0% (in comparison with the National Data of 70%) – Improved martial relationship – 80% – 100% of our Young Families received medical and social assistance and counseling - Out of the 18 fathers in the program only 1 is currently seeking employment while the remaining 17 have permanent employment.
